Lifestyle wedding photography, focuses on the moments in between. A wedding day is filled with little fleeting moments. It is the moment your mother leans in and gives you a kiss after helping lace or the back of the wedding dress or the firm handshake your best man gives you before you head to the front of the ceremony to wait for your bride to walk down the aisle. These moments are not posed or staged. They are life happening.
A lifestyle photography approach focuses on those little moments. It is a natural and spontaneous perspective of the wedding day. It does not go to the extent of documentary photography, when the photographer does not interfere with the setting or the people at all. Nor is it the other extreme of fine art photography, where every photograph is meticulously posed and styled.
Lifestyle wedding photography is the comfortable middle ground. Moments not poses are highlighted. It allows the emotions and the context of a wedding day to complement subtle direction from the photographer. Humans are dynamic: breathing, moving and living their lives. By giving natural actions or suggesting locations, a wedding photographer is able to highlight the best of the day.
Let the moments in between, the small breathes that makes the day' the moments the emotions come tumbling out. Let those share the unspoken beauty of your wedding day. Often before wedding romantics, I will lead the couple to the optimal setting and light. Then I back away letting them simply take in a breath of air free of the pressure and stress of the wedding day. I let them quietly say hello or just have a chance to say, I love you.
I tell them I am setting up the shot, and dialing in my settings. In reality, I am letting them become comfortable and take a breath. Only then do I give direction.
